Activities

There are several activities as part of the TxARM Alliance. Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi is leading two of the alliance actitivies.

Activity 4 - Exposure to International Institutions

This AGEP focus is to provide international development opportunities for graduates from the TAMUS related to specific dissertators education. At the Universities of Tromsø Bergen in Norway and Universities of Otago and Auckland in New Zealand there are wide opportunities in Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Engineering for career development. TxARM participants will receive a quarterly update on international opporutinites. In Fall 2018 (October), dissertators will attend a workshop in Corpus Christi on international opportunities. Starting in late Fall 2018, TxARM participants will have the opportunity to travel to either New Zealand or Norway to be directly involved with international collaborations based upon their areas of expertise and interest. The goal of these meetings it to provide dissertators opportunities for job development, international research collaborations, and international granting.

Activity 6 - Job Planning, Preparation, Search, and Networking Strategies

Preparing for an academic position requires long-term commitment in skills development, CV refinement, addressing what the academic positions of interest require while pursuing Ph.D. degrees or while on Postdoc assignments, followed by successful academic job search strategies, interviewing and negotiation skills and other targeted job preparation.

Although almost all institutions have career services support, these services are not always customized to each individual student/postdoc's needs or goals. Actis Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career faculty URM cohort members in STEM through personalized services that directly address their needs towards securing a faculty position and becoming a successful faculty member. Activity #6 continues to evolve based on the individual needs of the cohort members. Through personalized and just-in-time services, Activity #6 continues to contribute to the TxARM model through highly adaptive services. The most recent focus of Activity #6 has been academic writing, including grant writing, academic/postdoc position portfolio development, and other support as requested by cohort members, in support of the mission to increase diversity in STEM professoriate"
